Lesson objective: introduce some new vocabulary that useful in everyday context, to let them practice with it in isolation, and then let them practice in a reality-based context.
Personal goal: To do this lesson all in Spanish, not only to challenge my own language ability, but more to get a sense from my “students” about what it’s like to be taught only in their L2 with this approach; provide a variety of unrelated realia materials to see if their extended visual interest has any effect on vocabulary learning and to test what we lose when we don’t follow the premise of teaching vocabulary in thematic sets or pairs.
- In Spanish, explain to students the lesson, e.g. how vamos a aprender a las cosas para vender.
- Write on board El Mercado
- Lay out articles on the table one at a time, along with the card and their price: una bolsa, el arte, un limon, un stylo, un tejido, un sombrero, la Virgen, una cucharita.
- For cultural context, call out: Venga aqui. Un buen precio.
- With each one, let them handle it and say its name back and forth as they pass it to one another and me.
- Cuanto cuesta __________? (Point to the price, which will always be one peso for the sake of this first lesson.)
- Get answers for each item: El stylo cuesta un peso. Let them ask either other.
- Possible step: Remove labels for each item and ask them to take turns matching the label with the item again.
- Possible step: Give everyone three pesos so they can buy three things from each other (so they don’t have to think about arithmetic).
- Possible step: Have them fill out the list of what they bought.
- Add one more word: dulces, and share them.
