Linked here is the PDF I found online about the top ten myths and facts about immigration.
Also, we were to do some research into immigrant and refugee groups. I chose to look at who’s coming into the US now:
From Refugee Transitions
Iraq
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that more than four million Iraqis have been displaced by the war in Iraq and its aftermath. Of these, about two million people have found asylum in neighboring countries, where many eke out a marginal living in poor, inner-city neighborhoods, often by working illegally for low wages as laborers, drivers, and restaurant workers.
Most Iraqi asylees are living in Syria and Jordan, but Iraqis have also sought asylum in Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, and Turkey. Because most Iraqis are unable to return to Iraq safely or to settle permanently in the countries to which they have fled, Western nations, including the United States, have begun to resettle those refugees who are considered by the UNHCR to be at greatest risk.
I downloaded a giant report onto my desktop, in case anyone wants it. Ditto one for Bhutan.
From Bhutan
Refugee populations are often resettled to the U.S. in large groups. One of the newest groups coming specifically to the Bay Area is Bhutanese refugees. After years of living in refugee camps in Nepal and being unable to return to Bhutan, they have finally been granted resettlement to restart their lives in the U.S.
Among those fleeing to other countries [From IRC]
Somalia
“The piracy epidemic is just one symptom of the appalling humanitarian conditions and chronic instability in Somalia,” says Bruce Hickling… The disastrous situation in Somalia has also forced hundreds of thousands of Somalis to seek refuge in neighboring countries. Dadaab camp in eastern Kenya is overflowing with more than 260,000 refugees, despite having been designed for 90,000.”
Pakistan
“More than two million people have been displaced by the fighting between Pakistani forces and Taliban militants in northwestern Pakistan. the IRC is providing lifesaving aid to thousands of displaced families.”
