Supplies: Lesson plan: dino pix, dinos, audio tape, markers, eraser, sticky stuff,
Workbook objectives: simple past; -er comparisons; stress, rhythm and intonation. Simple SVO syntax for present tense Q&A

On board:
•    Animals Past & Present: as we go along, branch to extinct, endangered, safe
•    Hang low: five dino color pix
•    Columns with their 5 names as headers for tallies

Arrange seating order: Lupita, Sharon, Ricardo, Luz, Raquel

5:00    Old Lady/Fly: SAFE    Do you have animals? Cat? dog? Show all animals. ID: swallowed, die, catch, wriggled jiggled tickled inside her. Play song.

Write “safe” under animals present    Point to the animals? Are they extinct? Are they endangered? Listen and sing.    Warmup. Set context for past. Personalize lesson.
5:10    Their dino drawings: comparatives: EXTINCT    Write “extinct”Hand out their drawings.

Work in pairs. Label the drawing with the listed words.

Are they still living? Extinct.

Look at drawings and describe.    Review comparatives & check comprehension
5:20    Dino paintings: habits: EXTINCT    Call them to board for contest: which dino is running, flying, eats meat, is huge, is small, is heavy, eats plants. Wh- Q&A    First to point to answer gets points by their names.    Context for reading & vocab check

Reinforce grammar of wh- questions & answers

Check comprehension of event, cause, era.*    Underline unknown words    Vocab and story comprehension.
5:40    Act it out: EXTINCT    Hand out 4 dinosaurs and a ball.    They act out what happened. The thing hits, they get cold and they die.    Verify comprehension.
5:50    Ibex reading: EXTINCT    Show them pic. Read bottom p 52.

6:10    ENDANGERED    Add “endangered” to mindmap. Show them the word “danger” in there. It means they might disappear like the dinosaurs.

6:30    Extinct, Safe or Endangered    Three columns on board. Hand out my drawings.    Put it in the extinct, endangered or safe place and say a sentence about it.     Simple present SVO syntax. Test comprehension.
6:40    Jeopardy game    Competition. Gather kids around my computer. Keep track of score.    Choose a question and answer it.
6:55    HOMEWORK:    Draw an imaginary animal. Is it safe, extinct or endangered? How big is it? What is its habitat? What does it eat?

* They died ‘cause asteroid hit and the weather got too cold. They lived for more than 160 million years. They died out about 65 million years ago. Where did the lat Pyrenean ibex die? Spain. Why did it die? Scientists don’t know.

Optional: How long ago?     Timeline.  Mark now mark when

Then draw real timeline.    Guess when your grandparents were born. The  first human? How long ago do you think dinos died?     Comprehend concept of x million years ago.

What do giant pandas need? A lot of food. What is happening to giant pandas today? People are cutting down the bamboo forests. Where does the Komodo dragon live? On a few small islands in Indonesia. Where can you see Komodo dragons now? at the zoo.

Homework for Thursday, February 18

Imagine that you found a new kind of animal that no one has ever seen before. What does it look like? Draw it inside the circle.

Then, on a separate piece of paper, write the answers to these questions:

What is its habitat (what kind of place does it live)?

What food does it eat?

Is it extinct, endangered or safe?
