Among the types of correction are:
S: I sleeped all morning. That’s why I’m sleepy.
T: I sleeped, or…?
If the S can correct, it helps them identify a mistake. If they can’t, you know it’s an error and something you can work on. That’s helpful feedback.
T: Now tell me what I just said.
S: The path was dark and steep.
T: Did I say dark?
The response is parental and shaming. He could have said “What was it that I said?”
When you have song lyrics, get them through the meaning of the lyrics first. Go thru it. Get is solid. Separate from playing the song. Otherwise it’s too much for them.
ESL classroom uses a lot of “fast writes” or “free writes” (and uses them early). Later the Ss can go and fix grammar and punctuation, but not initially. Just let them get unfiltered ideas on paper.
