Kiswahili Class

  • Kabla: Before (kabla ya)
  • Baada: After
  • Mada: Topic
  • Kwanza: First
  • Pya: New (mada mpya, darasa jipya, mwalimu mpya)
  • Mtu (one person); watu (people)
  • Vipi? How? (Like ‘What do you think?’)
  • Namba: Number
  • Chagua: Choice
  • Mti: Tree

They don’t say “mtu moja” (one person). Instead: Take the first letter of the noun and stick it with the number. Thus, Mtu mmoja is one person, and watu wawile = two people (not watu wambile).

This system works with all m/wa nouns.: mwalimu mmoja, walimu wawili. Stuff in bold is irregular. Everything after 5 is irregular.

  1. Mtu mmoja
  2. Watu wawili
  3. watu watatu
  4. Watu wanne
  5. Watu watano
  6. Watu NOT wasita, but watu sita
  7. Watu saba
  8. Watu wanane OR watu nane
  9. Watu tisa (hapana watu watisa)
  10. Watu kumi

Another group: m/mi, which works the same as above:

  1. Mti mmoja
  2. Miti miwili
  3. Miti mitatu
  4. Miti minne
  5. Miti mitano
  6. Miti sita
  7. Miti saba
  8. Miti nana
  9. Miti tisa
  10. Miti kumi
